Samsara

Keith's and my valiant attempt to shovel the street!

Oh how quickly joy turns to sorrow! My elation over the snow has more than faded. I need to work! But our street isn't plowed and our car has horrible tires and we can't get out. And it is snowing yet again!!!

Working at the El Monte (or these are the gems I come across when weeding through my papers)

in Granby, Colorado. Run by Polish immigrants. I was sitting with my co-workers at a table as they watched the Super Bowl. "Who's playing?" I asked. "The Broncos! How can you not know? The Denver Broncos!" There was an older, hardened lady with permed lackluster brown hair. A chain smoker. There was a man in his 40's who was always asking me, "How in the hell did you end up here?" I forget his job. Then another tall guy who was the cook and lived in barely more than a shed out back. The dishwasher was the old Polish grandmotehr who spoke no English. The two little boys were full of mishief. Especially the slovenly older one who seemed so sneaky and was always trying to get his brother in trouble. I ate those crazy sandwiches there. What are they called? Oh yeah, Monte Cristos. It was like fried dough with ham and swiss cheese inside and powdered sugar on the outside. And shoestring fries. They had an old fashioned milk machine. When I worked the front desk I watched TV. Me and the wife of Joe, the owner.

Welcome

To the land of unplowed streets!

People digging out their cars only to make walls around them...

Footpaths to the grocery store!

Cars stuck in the middle of streets...

God I love these paths down the middle of streets!

Keith, This is What You're Missing!

Our garbage cans are buried somewhere there!
The car

Can you believe this?

And this?

Eastern at dusk

In front of our house

Update #2 From the Warmth of My House!

Well, it's 3:30 and it's stopped snowing...I'm a little disappointed in this, "Snowmageddon"--(delightful term Obama!) as the snow was supposed to continue until 8PM...Oh well--it's still the biggest snowstorm I can ever remember seeing...Thanks to being basically stranded at home, I've finished packing for Asia! Yay! About to finish watching Bright Star, take another walk and make parsnip butter bean soup...

Update #1 From: The Outside aka Snowbound! or It's All ABout the Snow!

Doesn't look like I'm going anywhere anytime soon!
I never noticed this place until my walk this morning...

Eastern Ave--this main street isn't looking too driveable!

My street!

The bedroom window...

Can't see out the basement windows!
Oh goodness! Keith has been wanting me to get some aerobic exercise for some time now. And geeze, my recent walk fit the bill! It is crazy out there--apocalyptic. Unlike other places I've lived, Baltimore doesn't plow side streets...No one could get their cars out of these streets even if they wanted to, even if they could get themselves dug out! They are impassable! The snow is at least up to my knees...I managed to walk to the mailbox and then out to Eastern to see what a main street looked like--not good! It was somewhat plowed, but still snowy snowy. The only thing moving were ambulances and plows...I stood on the corner by the Middle Eastern market and called Keith and my dad--reporting in from the frontlines...I don't know how I'll possibly be able to pick Ketih up at the airport tomorrow night! It is beautiful though. I love that I was able to lay down in the middle of the street to take photos...This is all very exciting.

Snowy Moon

How apt is it that the name for February's moon is Snowy? Very apt indeed! So looking forward to a day of alternating chilliness/warmth...Snow walks and baths, snow pictures and hot chocolate. Even doing laundry and dishes sounds cozy right now. And oh, the weeding through of the detritus surrounding my life...

I Feel Like It's Christmas Morning!

Fell asleep to snow falling, woke up to snow falling...I can't remember the last time I have been in such a storm as this--a blizzard, if you will! By 4:30 this morning, Baltimore already had 20 inches of snow! It's been snowing since 11:15 yesterday morning and not expected to stop until 8 tonight! Oh how I wish Keith were here to revel in this beauty with me...I love how Baltimore really makes snowy days into holidays! Driving home yesterday was like going through a ghost town...No cars on the road, no people walking about...I wonder if the main streeets are fine? Back here on this side street--it's snow snow snow. Each car just buried! I couldn't get out if I wanted (no shovel)! It is so unbelievably beautiful. Last night the backyard was lit and glowing as though it were daytime...It's almost snowy walk time (it's still 7:30 in the morning--girl woke me up, tromping around up there...)!
